Role Overview
A Principal Banker or Associate Banker is sought to work as a member of the Agribusiness team in the EBRD Istanbul ETC Hub. The successful candidate will have a proven track record and will play a leading role in structuring and closing transactions in both the public and private sectors, using the full range of financing structures available to the Bank.
The EBRD Agribusiness team has more than 15 years of experience in over 300 transactions across our 30 countries of operation, which range from central Europe to Central Asia. The team completes 20 – 30 transactions each year in the Bank’s Early Transition Countries, has an active portfolio of over 60 transactions, and a strong pipeline of deals. We seek a professional with the experience, capability and enthusiasm to become part of our growing success story in the Early Transition Countries.
The Principal or Associate Banker will be involved in transactions which span the entire production chain, from farming, processing and trading to food distribution, packaging and retail, as well as in developing the sector by supporting local and foreign investments.
To enhance the Bank’s capacity in ETCs, the Bank is establishing a hub of sector team bankers located in Istanbul to work in partnership with Resident Office bankers in the ETCs to complete transactions. The Istanbul Hub will be complementary to the successful Tbilisi hub and will focus primarily on the ETCs of Central Asia (Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) and secondarily on Belarus and Moldova. Consistent with EBRD’s Organisation Capacity Building business model in Resident Offices, this role will have dual-reporting to the Director Agribusiness Team and Head of Istanbul ETC Hub.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
The candidate should be fully capable of working throughout the whole life cycle of projects. This will be accomplished through marketing, project screening, origination, due diligence, structuring, negotiation, preparation, monitoring of projects and execution. The Banker will:
- Participate in origination and execution of new transactions, existing projects and proactively engage in the oversight of these projects in partnership with bankers in the ETC Resident Offices.
- Geographic/regional remit of this role will include Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, and Moldova. Frequent travel to the assigned countries is required. The geographic remit may be altered to meet the team’s transaction and transition objectives.
- Liaise and work with other departments, coordinating their involvement in the project as required.
- Undertake marketing and project origination activities; identify good quality transactions meeting the Bank’s requirements.
- Participate in the Preparation and presentation of initial and final review documents to the Operations Committee.
- Prepare and review financial and other due diligence analysis
- Actively participate in the monitoring of investments including preparation of regular monitoring reports, managing client relationship, recommendation of disbursements, waivers etc and resolve issues, for a given region or sector
- An important component of the job will be to participate in the work of the Team and provide guidance and coaching to more junior bankers and analysts in becoming fully involved in the detailed processing work, as and when required.
- Assist the Bank’s policy dialogue with relevant Governments and business contacts on selected issues/projects.
Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Good relevant degree from a leading university in the country of education (e.g. business administration, economics, finance).
- Relevant experience in a commercial bank, investment bank, and/or project finance experience, from a major international financial institution where he/she must have acquired high level banking/transaction skills and demonstrable expertise in structuring operations.
- Thorough understanding of credit, investment and financial analysis and their application in investment decisions and transaction structuring.
- Leadership experience in restructuring, corporatisation, and privatisation in Agribusiness sector in emerging markets of central/eastern Europe and former Soviet Union countries.
- Cash flow-based transaction experience.
- Sound problem resolution and decision making skills.
- Very good written and oral communications skills in English.
- Fluency in one or more languages of our countries of operation, particularly Russian;
- Work experience in emerging markets, in particular some of the Early Transition Countries.
