ABA ROLI is a non-profit program that implements legal reform programs in over 60 countries around the world. ABA ROLI has nearly 700 professional staff working abroad and in its Washington, D.C. office. ABA ROLI’s host country partners include judges, lawyers, bar associations, law schools, court administrators, legislatures, ministries of justice and a wide array of civil society organizations, including human rights groups.
JOB SUMMARY
The ABA Rule of Law Initiative in Turkey seeks a short-term Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Legal Expert for an initiative in Gaziantep, Turkey. The focus of this program will be providing legal assistance to Syrian refugees. The ideal candidate will conduct trainings to Turkish lawyers in Gaziantep, Turkey, with travel around the country.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct lawyer-trainings on how to engage GBV survivors and avoid causing secondary trauma, and how to discuss GBV issues with female and male victims;
- Prepare effective training materials, using interactive techniques;
- Provide training to lawyers on how to deliver effective legal awareness trainings, taking into consideration cultural needs and sensitivities of the trainees;
- Significant travel required;
- Other duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- JD or equivalent and 5 years of relevant legal experience, including a strong background in gender based and sexual violence and knowledge of applicable international law;
- Strong experience and background in working with GBV survivors in conflict settings;
- Prior experience preparing training materials and conducting trainings;
- Fluency in English;
- Knowledge of the region and Turkish language skills is a plus; and
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
